Arabic Baby Names
Arabic baby names have traditionally been based on the combination of a chain of names that means something together. Sometimes, when tradition is neglected, the meaning of the names can lose all sense such as in the case with "Abdul." This Arabic baby name by itself means nothing more than "servant of the" and therefore carries no significant or complete meaning. Arabic full names include the "ism," or given personal name, followed by the "kunya," where the person's first-born son is used as a substitute for the "ism," the "nasab," or a patronymic indicatng the person's heritage by the word ibn. Followed by these are the "laqab," a name indicating a description of the person, and finally "nisba," indicating the individual's occupation. Popular baby boy names include Ahmed, meaning "most highly praised," Akil, meaning "intelligent," Basim or "the smiling one," Hakim, meaning "wise and judicious," and Hasim meaning "the decisive one." Popular baby girl names include Farrah, meaning "happiness," Iman, meaning "faith or belief," Aaliyah, meaning "to ascend, or exulted," and Isra, meaning "journey by night."
